Values Statement
This is a living articulation of our shared community values. Created by the Smith Fellows Program Advisory Board, Staff and with input from the Fellows community, it is intended to grow and adapt over time as an evolving expression of our collective principles.
The Smith Fellows Program and community value respect and dignity for all. Likewise, as an entity promoting approaches based on and informed by evidence, we recognize and welcome diverse systems of evidence, including scientific, local, traditional, Indigenous, and community knowledge, as well as multiple ways of knowing. The Smith Fellows Program recognizes that the advancement and excellence of conservation research and practice is intertwined with and relies on a commitment to greater access and inclusion of people of many views, vantage points, identities, lived experiences, and geographies who actively participate in conservation with equal opportunity, access, and sense of belonging. We strive to embrace these values in all aspects of the Program’s operations.
Code of Conduct
The Smith Fellowship community is rooted in trust, collaboration, and care. Our goal is to cultivate a safe, inclusive, and enriching environment for every Fellow, mentor, staff member, and guest. This Code of Conduct exists to help us live our values, and to ensure accountability when they are compromised.
This document outlines both our shared behavioral commitments and specific actions that will not be tolerated. It applies to everyone participating in all program-related activities, whether in person or virtual:
Fellows (of any status: active, newly awarded, or alumni)
Staff
Board members
Any other individual participating in an official Smith Fellowship-sponsored event (e.g., retreats, reunions, or conference meet-ups), such as mentors, speakers, or guests
Our Shared Commitments
We ask everyone in the Smith community to actively uphold the following community agreements:
1. Treat Each Other With Respect
We value diverse identities, experiences, and perspectives. We speak and act with kindness, listen with intention, and assume good faith.
2. Communicate Thoughtfully
We use inclusive language and avoid assumptions. We share feedback respectfully and receive it with openness. We are mindful of how our words may land across different cultures and contexts.
3. Respect & Communicate Boundaries
We recognize that each person has different comfort levels around social and physical interaction. We take responsibility for communicating our own boundaries, and we listen and stay alert to others’ cues (verbal or nonverbal) and requests. We respect personal space and privacy. When in doubt, we ask.
4. Support a Safe and Welcoming Space
We look out for one another. If we see exclusion, disrespect, or harm, we speak up or seek help. We aim to create spaces where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
5. Be Patient and Flexible
We understand that plans may change and logistics can be complex. We bring curiosity, good faith, and adaptability to unexpected situations.
Unsupported Behavior
The following are examples of behaviors that may result in a range of responses – from informal conversation, to formal investigation, removal from events, or dismissal from the program.
Participation in or promotion of harassing, intimidating, disruptive, or discriminatory behaviors, both in-person or on social or digital media platforms, that interferes with the safety, comfort, or functioning of the group
Discriminatory remarks, jokes, or gestures targeting any aspect of identity
Physical intimidation or unwanted physical contact
Aggressive, or threatening behavior
Criminal activity or conduct that violates applicable local laws or ordinances
Possession or use of illegal substances during Smith-related events
Retaliation against someone for raising a concern or report
If you experience or witness something that doesn’t feel right, we encourage you to speak with a program staff member or trusted community member.
Reporting Concerns
You may report concerns to a staff member, board member, or designated ombudsperson in person, by phone, or by email.
We will handle reports promptly, seriously, and with discretion. Please raise concerns with a trusted person in a timely manner. Retaliation for making a report will not be tolerated.
